Are you in your zone of genius?

I started reading “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks over the weekend.

He discusses a pretty cool concept that I’d like to share with you.

Our activities occur in four main zones…

The Zone of Incompetence
The Zone of Competence
The Zone of Excellence
The Zone of Genius

I love this idea.

The Zone of Incompetence

This zone is full of all the activities you’re not good at. Many people waste a ton of time in this zone.

The author gave the example of a business consultant who charges $1000 an hour who spent 13 hours trying to set up his printer. He ended up hiring a kid down the street who took 1 hour. This man essentially wasted $13,000 dollars on an activity that was obviously in his zone of incompetence.

The Zone of Competence

This zone is full of activities you’re okay at, but others can do them just as well. You may be good at these activities, but they don’t fulfill you. They’re boring, or they just don’t inspire you.

An example from my own life is proofreading. I can do it if I have to, but after a while it makes me want to crawl out of my skin.

The Zone of Excellence

This zone is all about the activities you do really well. This may even be how you make your living. Many people do make a living in this zone. Very good ones. There is a problem with this zone, however. Let me explain it with an example…

Let’s say you are an incredibly successful lawyer. You have clients coming to you. You charge a high fee. And you’re incredibly good at what you do. The problem is if what you do doesn’t inspire you and what you really want to do is play the guitar in a rock band.

That’s where the next zone comes in.

The Zone of Genius

This zone is all about the activities that are uniquely suited to you. It’s about liberating and expressing your natural genius.

This zone is really about your calling. What you’re meant to do. The unique talents and gifts you’re meant to share with the world.

If you’re not in this zone, you’ll feel it. You’ll feel a bit uncomfortable. According to the author, as you get older and you’re still not in this zone, you’ll get alarms that can show up as depression, illness, injuries, and relationship conflict.

Not good.

Hopefully, by now, you’re beginning to see how these play out in your own life and business.

What zones are you in during the day? Are you mostly in your zone of genius, or in the zone of Incompetence.

I know for me, I’m going to pay attention and move as much into my zone of genius as I can.

How amazing would it be to spend 100% of your time in the Zone of Genius. He says it’s possible.

It is certainly a challenge worth pursuing.

No more proofreading for this girl.
