Who do you need to be?

You’ll notice on this blog that I write a lot about personal development, mindset, and psychology. First, I can’t help myself (my doctorate is in psychology). Second, and most importantly, if you work on your inner game, the outer game flows naturally and easily.

I’ve read in several places in some variation or another that owning your own business is 80% inner game and 20% outer game. From my experience, I believe that 100%.

In order to improve their lives, many people ask questions in this way:

How do I…

  • Become more productive?
  • Have better relationships?
  • Become a better leader?
  • Get my team to perform better?
  • Lose 20 pounds?
  • Find the wo/man of my dreams?
  • Make more money?
  • Take my business to the next level?

All good questions on the surface.  Let’s look at a better question that gets to the heart of real change…

Who do I need to be to…

  • Become more productive?
  • Have better relationships?
  • Become a better leader?
  • Get my team to perform better?
  • Lose 20 pounds?
  • Find the wo/man of my dreams?
  • Make more money?
  • Take my business to the next level?

Can you see the difference? One is about tactical, and often temporary, solutions. The other is about changing your identity and mindset to be who you need to be in order to reach your goals.

Let’s take the following questions: “How do I take my business to the next level?” versus “Who do I need to be to take my business to the next level?”

The first one implies a bunch of actions you can take to get your business moving forward.

The second is all about making an internal shift, one of values, integrity, honesty, service, and fun. Your actions will automatically follow from this internal place.

So… who do you need to be to have a business and life you love?

In the next article, I’ll share how it’s not about becoming but uncovering.

With love and joy,
