My car was stolen over Thanksgiving and how it relates to coaching

… So I have been in a bit of a holding pattern for a couple of weeks.

My car was found on Saturday after being missing for about a week. It was a bit stripped down. So now I’m waiting to find out if it can be repaired, or if the insurance company will total it out and I’ll have to buy a new car.

All of this is out of my hands and it feels a bit disconcerting.

I started thinking about why I have this urge to do something — why not being in control of the situation makes me uncomfortable.

And I realized that the type of personality it takes to run a coaching business has a lot to do with it.

One of the main reasons that many of us start our own coaching businesses is so that we can control our own lives — our time, our finances, our freedom.

It’s empowering to have that control, to forge our own way.

However, here’s the interesting bit… There is one BIG part of business that is out of our control.

We can’t make someone sign up for our coaching. 

We can, however, do our best to help them see why investing with us is in their best interest because our coaching can make a significant difference in their lives.

Doing our best to connect, market, and sell, but knowing that ultimately it is out of our hands.

So… what do we do about that?

For me, I’ve found that what works best is what I’m trying to do about the car situation. I’m doing what I can and am willing to do and leaving the rest alone.

I could have driven around my town to see if I could spot my car, but that seemed like a waste of time.

Instead, I decided to focus on the activities I could do and that have the most impact. I bought “The Club” car lock and a GPS locator device to make sure this doesn’t happen again. I’ve also been researching cars in case I need to buy a new one.

It’s the same in business.

Even though the client’s investment decision is out of our hands, we can focus on what is going to have the most impact on someone signing up for coaching with us.

We can decide what’s worth doing and what isn’t.

And in the end, that’s all we can do.
